Plotting landscape history of North Mayo, using online maps

As part of St Cormac’s Society Local Heritage Mapping Project, kindly supported by Mayo County Council Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2021 and the Heritage Council, our members have built the first modern-parish based heritage map of North Mayo,* featuring links to the online 1911 Census records.

All previous maps were based on obsolete civil parishes and the new modern parish boundaries were plotted, based on volunteer interviews with GAA club officers, local parish priests and parish natives, with research using local history journals and parish registers. This was combined with the Mayo Sites and Monuments dataset and hyperlinks within each townland record to its corresponding 1911 census return for each household.*

The research behind this work and available resources used were presented in ‘Exploring landscape history of a parish through maps’ webinar by Liam Alex Heffron on behalf of St Cormac’s Society as part of Heritage week on 19 Aug 2021 (Recording of the event available above, presentation doc below).

* also including parishes of West Sligo.

**beginning with Moygownagh parish, work ongoing.
